In short: TikTok’s ads reached 153 million US adults in late 2025, 55.7% of everyone 18 and over according to DataReportal, and TikTok Shop has let businesses sell inside the app since September 2023. A free TikTok business account is worth the effort for a company whose work looks good on video and whose customers are mostly under 45; for everyone else, it is a no-budget test to run before committing.

Not every business needs to be on TikTok. This guide helps you decide, then lays out a concrete way to start, with what you need to know about in-app selling and the advertising rules.

How many Americans use TikTok, and is it here to stay?

Audience figures vary by source because they measure different things. DataReportal’s Digital 2026 report for the US, based on the platforms’ own ad tools, puts TikTok’s ad reach at 153 million adults aged 18 and over in late 2025, or 55.7% of US adults. For comparison, the same report lists an ad reach of 198 million for Facebook and 182 million for Instagram, counting all ages. DataReportal itself cautions that ad-tool numbers do not always match active user counts.

Either way, TikTok is no longer a niche app: by its ad reach alone, it can put your videos in front of more than half of American adults.

The other question US business owners asked for years was whether the app would be banned. That uncertainty has eased. On January 23, 2026, TikTok announced the TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, set up to comply with the September 2025 executive order: an independent entity run by a seven-member, majority-American board, with Silver Lake, Oracle and MGX as managing investors holding 15% each. The app keeps operating in the US under that structure.

Which businesses is TikTok worth it for?

The platform rewards short vertical videos that show something happening. Ask yourself three questions.

  1. Does your work film well? A baker shaping dough, a carpenter assembling a staircase, a stylist transforming a haircut, a mechanic diagnosing an engine: yes. A compliance consulting firm: much harder.
  2. Are your customers there? Consumers under 45, yes. Industrial purchasing managers, far less often.
  3. Can you keep a pace? Two to three videos a week for three months is the minimum to learn anything.

Three yeses: go. Two: run a three-month test. One: put your effort elsewhere, for example LinkedIn for B2B.

Sprout Social’s 2025 Index, based on 4,044 consumers in the US, the UK, Canada and Australia, adds a buying signal: TikTok is the platform where Gen Z (54%) and millennials (47%) most often say they purchase directly. TikTok is a place to sell, not only to be entertained.

How do you start on TikTok as a small business?

1. Switch to a business account. In the account settings, switch to a business account. You get analytics, a library of music cleared for commercial use and access to the ad tools. Note that business accounts cannot use the full music library available to personal accounts, for licensing reasons.

2. Complete the profile. A recognizable name, a profile photo that reads at small size, a one-line bio that says what you do and for whom, and a link to your website.

3. Watch before you post. Spend a week studying accounts in your industry and the accounts your customers follow. Note the recurring formats, video length and tone.

4. Pick two or three formats and stick to them. For example:

FormatExample for a woodworking shopWhy it works
Before and afterA restored door in 20 secondsThe transformation keeps people watching to the end
Behind the scenesChoosing lumber in the shopShows real skill
Answering a question“Oak or maple for stairs?”Answers what customers search for
Common mistake“Why your hardwood floor squeaks”Useful, so it gets saved and shared

5. Hook in the first second. Show the result, ask the question or name the problem right away. Introductions (“Hi, I’m…”) make people scroll.

6. Add captions. Many people watch with the sound off, on transit or at work. The app’s auto-captions are fine, as long as you proofread them.

In moderation. The same Sprout Social Index found that about a third of consumers find it “embarrassing” when brands jump on viral trends, and 27% think it only works within the first 24 to 48 hours of a trend’s life.

A trend is only worth it if it fits your trade and you can jump on it fast. A small business without the reflexes or the tone for it will gain more from useful videos about its craft. To keep ideas coming without chasing trends, see our 8 ways community managers stay creative. The two approaches can coexist: a base of useful content, plus an occasional well-chosen trend.

How does TikTok Shop work for US sellers?

TikTok Shop launched fully in the US on September 12, 2023. In its launch announcement, TikTok described several ways to sell:

  • in-feed video and LIVE shopping, with tagged products in videos and livestreams on the For You feed;
  • a product showcase on the brand’s profile, with product tiles, collections and reviews;
  • the Shop tab, a marketplace with search and promotions;
  • an affiliate program that pays creators a commission to promote your products;
  • Fulfilled by TikTok, an optional service that stores, packs and ships orders.

Sellers sign up through the Seller Center. TikTok’s announcement does not set out its commission rates, so check the terms in force in the Seller Center before you work out your margins.

Selling on TikTok is still selling at a distance: you handle shipping times, returns and refunds, and consumer protection rules apply as they would on your own store. TikTok Shop suits visual products at impulse-buy prices that are easy to ship.

What does the FTC require for ads and creator partnerships?

There are two paid levers: TikTok ads (targeted ad placements, covered in our guide to TikTok ads) and partnerships with creators.

For creators, the FTC’s Endorsement Guides apply. Its Disclosures 101 guide for influencers sets out the essentials:

  • disclose any financial, employment, personal or family relationship with the brand, and free or discounted products count;
  • put the disclosure in the video itself, both spoken and on screen, not only in the caption or description;
  • use clear words such as “ad,” “advertisement” or “sponsored,” not vague tags like “sp” or “collab”;
  • do not rely on the platform’s disclosure tool alone, and repeat the disclosure during livestreams.

Put those requirements in writing in your agreement with the creator. Before you sign anyone, read our guide to influencer marketing, which covers choosing creators and drafting the contract.

How do you know if TikTok pays off?

Views do not pay invoices. Track three levels of metrics:

  1. Attention: views, average watch time, share of viewers who watch to the end.
  2. Interest: followers gained, saves, shares, profile visits, link clicks.
  3. Results: quote requests, sales, bookings. Ask every new customer how they found you.

After three months, compare the time spent with the results. If TikTok brings neither leads nor sales, move that time elsewhere. Avoid shortcuts such as buying followers, which breaks TikTok’s rules and skews the very numbers you are trying to read.

TikTok is one channel among many. It belongs inside a social media strategy that starts with choosing the right networks, and inside a broader digital marketing plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is TikTok good for B2B businesses?

Rarely as a first network. TikTok mostly reaches consumers, and B2B decision-makers are easier to find on LinkedIn. It can work for recruiting younger talent, or for a company whose work films well, such as a workshop, a job site or a production line. Test it for three months with organic videos before you put any ad budget behind it.

How often should a business post on TikTok?

There is no official rule. A sustainable pace of two to three videos a week for three months gives you enough material to see what works and what does not. Consistency matters more than volume: two videos every week beat ten in the first week followed by nothing, both for the algorithm and for what you learn.

Can you sell directly on TikTok in the US?

Yes. TikTok Shop launched fully in the US on September 12, 2023. Sellers sign up through the Seller Center and can sell through shoppable videos, LIVE shopping, a product showcase on their profile and the Shop tab. You remain responsible for orders, shipping, returns and customer service, and should check the current fees in the Seller Center first.

Do you have to disclose a paid creator video on TikTok?

Yes. The FTC requires disclosure whenever there is a financial, employment, personal or family relationship with the brand, and free products count. The disclosure belongs in the video itself, spoken and on screen, using clear words such as 'ad' or 'sponsored'. The FTC also warns not to rely on a platform's built-in disclosure tool alone.
